I love to see and hear the first Swallows of the year arriving, swooping and screaching as they go. To me it is a sign that long, warm summer days are not too far away!
These tiny little birds migrate thousands of miles every year to reach British shores to breed and raise their young. Because they spend such a huge amount of time on the wing, I decided to design the Swallow in flight, and it accentuates the beautiful shape of the bird.
Textured, dark midnight blue glass reflects the stunning feather colour, and a flash of smooth red on the head gives the Swallow its unmistakable bold marking.
Every bird is hand crafted from start to finish. Firstly the glass is hand cut, then all edges are copper foiled and soldered together. This method of stained glass is called Tiffany. It allows very small shapes of glass to be used and gives greater detail to the piece.
The Swallow is mounted on to a hand waxed wooden base, which allows it to be displayed in any situation in the home . . . . . . bookcase, shelving, mantel or windowsill. The underside of the wood is covered with baize to prevent any marking to the surface it is placed on.
