No bird is more recognisable in our British countryside than the Pheasant. When the male is seen up close its amazing feathering is truly stunning. It just asks to be recreated in stained glass to show their vivid colours. I have used three different combinations of glass, textured, streaky and iridescent to reproduce the Pheasant in all its glory, and capture its markings as closely as possible. He is finished with a bright yellow eye so he is really looking back at you!!
I have designed my own pattern from which to cut the glass out from. The next stage is to grind the edges smooth on all pieces, ready for the copper foil to be added. Finally, the pieces can be soldered together to make a finished bird. As all stages are carried out by hand, every bird will differ very slightly, giving them their own ‘character’.
The wooden base on which the bird is mounted is hand waxed, and allows it to be displayed in any situation, such as a windowsill, shelf or mantel. The base of the wood has a covering of baize to prevent any marking to surfaces.
